McLaren 788HS: The Ultimate Farewell to the 720S-Era V8 Supercar

The 750S platform has pushed McLaren’s engineering further, demonstrating everything that McLaren has learned over almost a decade of developing its mid-engined V8 supercars. This exclusive car, with only an expected 200 models, has more power, less weight and revamped aerodynamics. In the end, the 788HS embraces its predecessors and is an emotional and refined farewell to the 720S family. This unveiling was the first new McLaren since the last two years.

McLaren first introduced the 720S in 2017, replacing the 650S. Its launch brought significant advances in performance and design, with a carbon-fibre MonoCage structure and a twin-turbocharged V8 engine. Its distinctive aerodynamic philosophy and shape established it as one of the benchmark supercars of its era. The 720S previously had two relatives that possessed more performance than the original, with a track-focused evolved model, the 765LT and the 750S.

The 788HS now serves as the culmination of the development journey as the “final evolution” of the 720S. The “HS” label carries significance in McLaren’s history. Being the abbreviation of “high sport”, this badge has only been used twice in its past, as part of the MP4-12C HS and the MSO HS. Consequently, the 788HS becomes only the third McLaren to receive the title, accentuating the exclusivity of this model in McLaren’s catalogue.

At the core of the 788HS is McLaren’s 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, known internally as the M840T. In this iteration, the engine has increased power, producing approximately 777 horsepower (or 788PS) and 800Nm of torque. Furthermore, this model possesses a lightweight approach, with a claimed dry weight of 1,265kg, giving it a power-to-weight ratio of 623PS per tonne, the highest figure achieved by the 720S, 765LT and 750S family. These factors contribute to the 788HS performance statistics, situating it at the top of the Super Series range. McLaren quotes an impressive 0–100km/h acceleration time of 2.8 seconds, a 0–200km/h time of around 7 seconds and a top speed of 330km/h.

The 788HS features arguably one of McLaren’s most advanced aerodynamic packages. The design expands beyond physical appearance and focuses on improving functional benefits, such as driver confidence and stability. In comparison to previous models, key visual changes are apparent in the new S-Duct bonnet, a revised front splitter, an active rear spoiler and a Formula 1-inspired rear diffuser. These elements help increase downforce by 10% when compared to the 765LT. Additional aerodynamic details include a louvred under-wing panel designed to support airflow management and cooling efficiency. Overall, the functional improvements generated by the physical updates reflect McLaren’s focus on seamlessly integrating aerodynamics with the aesthetic and structural shape of the car.

McLaren, for the 788HS, has kept their original trademark hydraulic interconnected suspension system but added further tuning to sharpen handling responses. Additionally, carbon-ceramic brakes with six-piston callipers and newly added centre-lock wheels are included in this model line for the first time. The V8 engine roar is enhanced through a titanium quad-exit exhaust system, with its design styled to create a more engaging experience over the faster version of the 750S.

Exclusivity of the 788HS is emphasised by its strictly limited 200 production limit, divided evenly between Coupes and Spider convertibles. Each vehicle has personalised options through McLaren Special Operations, allowing owners to individualise their car’s specification through the company’s bespoke division. Inside, the 788HS receives unique design details including special badging, carbon-fibre elements and exclusive trim finishes. The interiors are consistent with McLaren’s focus on reducing unnecessary weight while maintaining the luxury expected of a limited-production supercar.

The arrival of the 788HS is more than another model of McLaren’s 720S, rather being the end of McLaren’s twin-turbo V8 Super Series era.

The motor industry is rapidly moving towards electrification and hybrid engines. Consequently, manufacturers are adapting their catalogues to appeal to the change in demand. Thus, the 788HS can be seen as the final celebration of McLaren’s lightweight, rear-wheel-drive V8 formula before the company moves into its next generation of vehicles. The 788HS represents the final development of a platform that helped redefine McLaren’s identity in the modern era.

The 788HS closes the 720S story at its highest point, being more powerful and lighter than its predecessors.
