The Red Collection pays homage to red’s significance to The Macallan’s history. It began with Alexander Reid, a farmer and teacher who founded the brand in 1824. He was better known, throughout the 1800s, as “The Red”, alluding to his surname, which means ‘the red one’ in Scots, and his distinctive red hair. Red continued playing an integral role almost a century later in 1903 with the creation of The Macallan Choice Old Range, which was reportedly shipped in illustrious red boxes to distinguish it from other whiskies on the market. The red theme continues into the 1980s with the adornment of vintage bottles with a red ribbon before its feature in The Red Collection as it currently stands.
