A Night at the Gallery: A Curated Experience of Art, Cuisine, and Immersive Elegance at AGWA

When art and gastronomy intertwine, the result is often a sensory revelation. In Perth, this dynamic fusion has come to life at the Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA), where a captivating private dining experience unfolds amidst the gallery’s curated masterpieces. Led by hospitality maestro Guy Grossi and contemporary artist Rone, this unique collaboration invites diners to indulge not only in fine cuisine but also in the provocative beauty of art in decay.

The Story Behind AGWA’s Hidden Gem

The Centenary Galleries at AGWA, tucked away behind the main exhibition spaces, had long been left in obscurity. For two decades, this architectural gem languished as a storage area for the gallery’s prized art collection. However, the forgotten space found a new lease on life when street artist Rone was approached by AGWA’s creative director, Ian Strange, to bring his multi-sensory installation Time to Perth.

Rone, renowned for his large-scale street art in forgotten corners of the city, including derelict factories and abandoned stations, was captivated by the opportunity to transform the neglected gallery wing. “The beauty in decay speaks to me,” says Rone. His vision for Time was to explore the intersection of beauty and deterioration, an idea perfectly embodied in the Centenary Galleries’ crumbling charm.

A Sensory Journey Through Art

Time is more than just an exhibition; it’s an experience that engages every sense. As visitors step into the space, they are greeted by the hauntingly atmospheric setting that feels like a forgotten mid-century workshop. The installation takes visitors through 12 rooms, each meticulously designed with historical nods and intimate details, from typewriters adorned with personal mementos to fabric labels paying homage to Rone’s grandmothers – who, amusingly, could not stand each other.

This journey into Rone’s world is not just visual but deeply emotional, inviting participants to reflect on the beauty inherent in life’s inevitable decay. The experience is complemented by a haunting musical score composed by Nick Batterham, adding another layer of sensory depth to the installation.

A Feast for the Senses

After taking in Rone’s thought-provoking art, guests are treated to an unforgettable culinary experience designed by Melbourne culinary legend Guy Grossi. Known for his mastery of Italian cuisine and a deep personal connection to the art of cooking, Grossi draws inspiration from his childhood memories of cooking with his father. His carefully crafted menu reflects this emotional connection, with each dish celebrating the simplicity and elegance of seasonal ingredients.

The dinner unfolds as a slow, immersive affair, with each course offering a new discovery. The Italian-inspired menu is rich with nostalgic touches, from a delicate risotto to a perfectly roasted veal. Every course is expertly paired with wines from St Hugo, adding a luxurious depth to the experience. “Each course is a reflection of the very essence of Italian cooking – where passion and tradition meet,” says Grossi.

An Evening at Time • Dining and Time • Bar

As the meal progresses, diners are transported into an atmospheric dining room, where nostalgia and refinement exist in perfect harmony. The ambience is intimate, set against the backdrop of Rone’s murals and the gallery’s elegant architecture. After dinner, guests are invited to wind down with a cocktail at Time • Bar, an exclusive pop-up speakeasy in a hidden corner of the gallery.

This sensory odyssey – melding art, history, and exquisite dining – offers a rare opportunity to experience a gallery in an entirely new light. The combination of Rone’s immersive art and Grossi’s culinary mastery is a testament to the evolving role of museums as spaces for both reflection and indulgence.
