BMW M Celebrates 50th Anniversary by Bringing Back Historic Logo

2022 marks the 50th anniversary year of BMW M GmbH, and they are celebrating this milestone by having a limited release reintroduction of the old BMW logos.

On the 24th of May 1972, BMW created a subsidiary known as BMW Motorsport GmbH to be the arm of the company that focuses on the production of high-performance cars. Since their founding, the company has grown in popularity and is known for its high-quality motorsport vehicles. As a celebration of their 50th anniversary year, BMW are giving customers the option of having the original “BMW Motorsport” logo if they purchase a BMW M automobile or BMW model with an M sport package. Orders for these select high-performance cars will have the original logo as an option from January 2022, and they will be produced from March 2022.

The iconic original “BMW Motorsport’ logo, which features the shifted blue, violet and red semicircles, was first used in 1973 on one of the company’s first racing cars. In 1978, the original logo was replaced with the now-famous slanting red, violet and red stripes leaning against the M that is to the right. This new logo first appeared on the BMW M1, which is the only series to feature both the original motorsport logo and this new slanted strips logo. The three original colours were chosen for their symbolism; blues represents BMW, red represents racing and high-performance, and violet is the connection and combination of the two. However, the violet colour has since changed to dark blue.

In addition, BMW has announced that 50 iconic and historic paint finishes will be available for selected models. Some of the colours on offer include Dakar Yellow, Fire Orange, Daytona Violet, Macao Blue, Imola Red and Frozen Marina Bay Blue.

The limited release of the original logo is not the only plan to celebrate their anniversary. Franciscus van Meel, Chairman of the Board of Management at BMW M GmbH, has said, “We have a great year ahead of us, which will be celebrated with unique product highlights and exciting performances. The M has long been considered the strongest letter in the world, and in our company’s anniversary year it is stronger than ever.”

So far, some of the product highlights that have been announced include the BMW M3 Touring, the first motorsport version in the series, the BMW M4 Coupé, and the first electric high-performance vehicle in the BMW M GmbH range. Furthermore, the exciting performances include one in May 2022 at Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on Lake Como in Northern Italy, the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Great Britain, the Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach, California and the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in Nürburg, Germany.

The 50th anniversary of BMW M GmbH, in 2022, will provide customers and enthusiasts with a fitting celebration of high-performance BMW automobiles.
