Return to Biarritz: Chanel’s Beginning

At the core of the Cruise 2026/2027 collection is it’s setting: Biarritz, a resort town on the French Basque coast along the Atlantic. This choice in location signifies the moment Chanel began to depart from the rigidity of Parisian fashion, embracing a more relaxed silhouette that became the brands hallmark style.

Held at the Casino Municipal and the adjacent coastal areas, allows this history to come to life as a dynamic backdrop. The model’s navigate between salon-like interiors and expansive seaside vistas, demonstrating the collections central theme blending refinement and freedom.  The collection under Matthieu Blazy’s leadership, his approach has been regarded as respectful and subtly transformative. Blazy’s collection maintains recognisable elements of the Chanel brand — such as monochrome paleetes and nautical motifs — whilst also softening the structure and introducing a sense of ease. Rather than relying completly on the spectacle, Blazy constructs a narrative highlighting a “lived in” quality rather than the normal rigid clothhing associated with formal runways. Many critics observed that this shift indicates a broad evolution of Chanel’s identity, moving towards a lifestyle-oriented luxury aesthetic.

Design Themes in the Cinematic Experience

In addition to clothing, the show is designed as a cinematic experience, the runway presented as a fil set with natural light, ocean backgrounds and architectural staging. These eements distincuish the collection and it’s presentation from a fashion show to a performance art. It creates an immersive effect, encoraging viewers to percieve Chanel as more than apparel but a distinct world. This particular approach corresponds with the trend of Cruise collections evolving into destination events.

Chanel in particular has taken advantage of this approach historically creating stories, hosting them in prestigious locations in previous seasons. This new Biarritz show continues this tradition focusing on it’s history. This particular collection demonstrates the runway using elements such as waves, shells, maritime and beach leisurewear. All elements are interpreted through Chanel’s couture perspective. Within the collection there is the recurring motif of fluidity created with the movements centering around the fabrics and unique tailoring replacing heavier silhouettes.

Chanel and Their Evolving Identity

This collection embodies a vision of Chanel, one that prioritises lived experiences and luxury. It promotes fashion that adapts to the body, responding to it’s surroundings embracing imperfections as an aspect of glamourious fashion. There is the reinforcement of the Cruise collection significance as platforms of storytelling and historical reflection. The Cruise 2026/2027 is a pivotal moment for Chanel as serves as a declaration of the brands direction.

The collection stands as a layered dislogue between past and present, revisting Chanel’s identity’s birthplace whilst projecting it into contemporary cinematic storytelling. Whether the presentation is percieved as a reinvention or a refinement, the collection demonstrates Chanel’s ability to create a narrative from fashion.
