Arkaba is one of the unique luxury places that people can stay in Australia. It is situated on 60,000 acres of privately owned protected outback land in the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. 

Few luxury stays have more privacy and relaxation potential than Arkaba. The homestead and Coachman’s cottage hosts up to ten guests at any time and can be hired out for exclusive use. Arkaba homestead has retained the original 1850’s homestead layout. The homestead has four bedrooms, and there is a fifth bedroom in the separate Coachman’s cottage; each bedroom has an ensuite bathroom. All rooms have air-conditioning/heating, a king bed, organic cotton sheets, open onto a shaded verandah, and spectacular views of the surrounding ranges. There is a library in the homestead with deep leather armchairs and a large stone fireplace; it is filled with books, magazines and board games. In the warmer months, you can enjoy a dip in the pool whilst looking onto the ranges and surrounding wildlife. 

The chefs at Arkaba specialize in promoting local products in their food and integrating native elements to create some of the most interesting authentically Australian food. Arkaba stocks only local wine from the nearby Barossa and Clare Valleys and beers brewed in South Australia. A stay at Arkaba includes chef-prepared meals, which can be enjoyed on the terrace with stunning views of the ranges. Wine and beer are best enjoyed in the garden with friends around the firepit. 

Arkaba is located on the lands of the Adnyamathanha people, many of whom still live in the region. Cave paintings and rock engravings can be seen around the hills and valleys in the Flinders Ranges. Arkaba Station was settled by Doctor William James Browne and Doctor John Harris Browne in 1851; they shortly gave up their medical career to focus on running sheep on the station. The station has had many owners throughout the centuries, as challenges like the Great Drought in the 1860s and destruction by dingoes in the 1890s have occurred. 

A couple of decades ago, Arkaba started having a strong focus on conservation. The first major conservation project undertaken at Arkaba was eradicating rabbits; it took 14 years and resulted in the returning of many native bushes and trees that the introduced species had wiped out. All sheep were removed from the station by 2014. 2-percent of the cost of staying at Arkaba goes towards conservation projects.
