Emily and Richard have a personal connection to Emu Bay and the houses, and their hope in running Hamilton and Dune is to bring the joy of Emu Bay that they experienced to other families. The background story of Dune and Hamilton House start 50 years ago when Emily’s parents would bring her and her sisters on holiday in Januarys to Emu Bay. Eventually, her parents built a shack, and the family started spending winter holidays there as well.
Richard’s father was a surgeon who would come to Kangaroo Island for his operating list but would stay for the weekend. Soon he started spending more time there and bringing his family, and soon after, they brought a shack.
One day Emily and her father invited Richard and his sisters to the house for drinks. Emily and Richard hit it off, and within a year, they were married at Emu Bay. Hamilton House is Richard’s family shack, and Dune House was built overlooking the spot where Richard and Emily first met.
There are many experiences available on the island that the administration of the houses is happy to organise at guests’ request, including yoga, fishing trips, mountain biking, island dining experiences, massage and beauty treatments, and cellar access. For foodies, the houses also offer an in-house chef experience or three meals a day, delivered for guests to cook, beach picnics and bed and breakfast. Amenities include welcome refreshment from the Islander Estate vineyard, cold and sparkling purified water zip tap, beach accessories, stand up paddleboards, board games and BBQ.
