Maserati’s Trophy Car Range

Maserati has unveiled its new top-version Trofeo – Italian for “Trophy” – range. It essentially features the ‘new-and-improved’, supreme and superfast versions of the Quattroporte and Ghibli sedans, named Quattroporte Trofeo and Ghibli Trofeo respectively. These will officially be the fastest sedans in the Maserati range, reaching the phenomenal speed of 202 mph, just a touch under 326 km/h.

The cars will be joining the Levante Trofeo, which has a maximum speed of 187 mph – still impressive for a semi-sport sedan. All vehicles in the range will be powered by the same Maranello-made, twin-turbo V8 engine. The 3.8 L engine takes 432 kW and 730 Nm of torque, 580 horsepower propelling the Ghibli Trofeo to make 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, whereas the Quattroporte Trofeo does so in 4.5 seconds. Both are rear-wheel drives, sending power via a ZF-supplied 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Both are updated with a new ‘Corsa’ driving mode, meant to make the overall driving experience smoother and more luxurious. This is through improvement in the throttle and engine responses, adding a Launch Control function, faster gear-shift movements, exhaust valves that fully open and more.

Visually, the Trofeo includes extra hood ducts and a red Trofeo emblem, though the car itself comes in the most elegant green finish also. The ‘Black Piano’- coloured front grille gives just the impression of the name of its true-noir paint shade. The sleek rear lights are a pleasurable nod to history, modelled after the Maserati 3200 GT.

Prices have not yet been disclosed, though there are estimates that they will cost upwards of US$150,000.
