Renowned for their iconic designs, formidable engines, and unmatched performance, Ferraris have long held a special place in the hearts of collectors and enthusiasts worldwide. The recent RM Sotheby’s Dare to Dream auction in Ontario, Canada, marked a historic moment as a complete set of the revered ‘Big Five’ Ferraris went up for auction, fetching an astonishing combined total of $US19,577,500 ($AU29,424,983).

Topping the list was the 2003 Ferrari Enzo, fetching an impressive $US4,295,000 ($AU6.46M) and solidifying its status as a true collector’s item. Following closely behind was the 1996 F50, which sold for $US4,240,000 ($AU6.37M), and the rare 1985 288 GTO, which fell just short of the $US4m mark at $US3,882,500 ($AU5.84M). Rounding out the quintet were the hybrid LaFerrari and the timeless 1990 Ferrari F40, which sold for $US3,690,000 ($AU5.55M) and $US3,470,000 ($AU5.22M) respectively.

Each car represented a different era in Ferrari’s storied history, and the story begins in 1984 with the introduction of the Ferrari 288 GTO, a groundbreaking model that set the standard for supercars to come. Widely regarded as Ferrari’s first true supercar, the 288 GTO boasted a muscular design, lightweight construction, and blistering performance, cementing its place in automotive history.

After the success of the 288 GTO, Ferrari set out on an unwavering quest for automotive perfection with the unveiling of the iconic F40 in 1987. Distinguished by its unique design, commanding rear wing, and thrilling performance, the F40 quickly ascended to legendary status, firmly cementing Ferrari’s position as a pioneering force in the world of supercars.

In 1995, Ferrari unveiled the F50, a targa-topped masterpiece that combined race-bred technology with unparalleled driving dynamics. Although initially met with mixed reviews, the F50 has since earned its place among the most sought-after Ferraris of all time.

Then, the turn of the millennium brought forth the Enzo Ferrari, named after the company’s legendary founder. Inspired by Formula One technology, the Enzo pushed the boundaries of performance and innovation, setting a new standard for hypercars in the 21st century.
