In the early 1970s, the Bryson Centre was one of the numerous mid-century high-rise buildings in Melbourne’s post-war architectural expansion. Today, the 23-story heritage-listed property has received a complete interior renovation, courtesy of its new owner EVT, in preparation for its new life as a Rydges hotel.
The design team for the Rydges group collaborated with architect Luchetti Krelle to ensure the hotel had an inherently Australian style. While maintaining the Modernist exterior, the designers replicated the naturally raw tones and textures synonymous with the Rydges brand. The light timber walls and natural stone floors create a calm and airy atmosphere for guests, while the abundance of natural light maximises the brightness of the interior.
Interior designer Janet Graham upheld the brand’s philosophy of harnessing local talents by including bespoke light fixtures and art pieces produced by members of the Victorian community.
Guests can choose to stay in any of the 370 guest rooms at the hotel, which all include a luxury king-sized Dream bed. Starting at $255 a night, the standard and deluxe king rooms are fitted with a bath and walk-in shower, ample closet spaces, and a full-length mirror. With the bed designed to face the stunning view of the CBD, the television is instead mounted to the wall and can slide out to face either the bed or the boucle couch.
For those looking for a long-term stay, the Rydge offers a range of 35 suites and 25 apartments to book. The apartment prices begin at $302 a night and have fully equipped kitchenettes with a cooktop, fridge, microwave, dishwasher and laundry. There is also a separate living and dining area, and a spacious bathroom with a bath, walk-in shower and dual vanity.
After booking their stays, guests arriving for their stay at Rydges will be met with the new check-in experience, one of the key features added to the hotel. Instead of queueing at a front desk, guests can use a self-service kiosk to enter a few details and tap their credit card to receive their room keys. The system is designed to speed up the process for guests, allowing them more time to experience their room and all the exceptional amenities provided.
On the upper floors, guests have access to the kitted-out fitness studio and stunning rooftop pool. Fitted with top-of-the-range equipment, Rydges has enhanced its gym by including high-tech interactive machines where guests can choose their workout and the screen will guide them through the exercises. The gym also overlooks the outdoor rooftop terrace, home to a heated pool all year round and sun loungers to relax and take in the exceptional view of the city.
The Rydges Melbourne also makes for an incredible events venue as it is now one of the largest in the city, with eleven flexible spaces across two levels. With 7m-high ceilings, the Centre Stage is the largest function room on offer. The Rydges group has elevated the space by installing a 4x7m HD LED screen and state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment, making it a perfect venue for gala dinners, conferences, or weddings. In fact, the hotel offers several wedding packages that feature the venue and include a fully catered menu of locally sourced cuisine.
At $39 per person, the hotel provides an extensive breakfast buffet, including fresh pastries, granola and seasonal fruits as well as an Asian station and a range of beverages. Guests can also choose from the a la carte menu, which features poached eggs and smashed avocado with edamame, kale and smoked almonds.
Guests also have access to 24-hour-in-room dining, which extends to Bossley Bar & Restaurant. Located on the ground floor, this restaurant offers an innovative blend of Australian and European flavours to create a selected menu with seasonal additions from around the region. Adjoining the restaurant, Bossley Bar also presents an assortment of small bites to enjoy with a delicious range of cocktails and an exquisite wine list.
For anyone looking for a luxurious city escape, the Rydges Melbourne is open for bookings throughout the upcoming Summer Season.
