Melbourne is set to welcome a chic new player in its hotel scene with The Standard’s announcement of The StandardX, Melbourne, opening its doors on 8 August 2024.
This innovative property, the inaugural venture of its kind for the brand, represents a bold leap forward from The Standard’s classic offerings, rekindling its youthful, next-generation spirit.
The StandardX concept is a distinct offshoot of the iconic Standard International brand, known for its vibrant presence in Miami, London, Bangkok, and chic locations such as Hua Hin, Ibiza, and the Maldives. This new venture takes a nostalgic dive into The Standard’s early days, with a fresh twist that resonates with today’s discerning traveller.
Nestled in the heart of Fitzroy, The StandardX draws inspiration from the area’s rich artistic heritage. Fitzroy, a neighbourhood famed for its iconic record stores, punk clubs, and legendary writers’ haunts, was a crucible of creativity in the 70s and 80s. This era saw the rise of the Little Band scene, with luminaries like Nick Cave and Rowland S. Howard, and an explosion of experimental art and music. While the gritty edges of Fitzroy have softened over time, its creative spirit remains unblemished, making it the perfect backdrop for The StandardX.
The interiors of The StandardX, designed by Melbourne-based firm Hecker Guthrie, reflect the vibrant and eclectic history of its locale. Guests are welcomed through a bold revolving door into an elevated lobby that exudes an inviting, relaxed charm. The space features a fireplace surrounded by columns wrapped in macramé by local artist Sarah Smalltown and paintings from Dane Lovett, complemented by bespoke furniture and antique pieces. The design ethos is a contemporary yet uncomplicated aesthetic, spread across eight floors of the hotel.
Each of the 125 rooms at The StandardX is crafted with a keen eye for comfort and style. The rooms range from the intimate Cozy King to the spacious Suite Spot, all showcasing a palette of blue and white. A plush bed takes centre stage, while a millwork ledge serves as both a writing corner and open closet. The rooms blend the raw edge of Fitzroy’s urban fabric with modern comforts and cultural touches, including artwork by Jane Sinclair.
Dining at The StandardX is a culinary adventure in itself. The hotel boasts three distinctive food and beverage venues. BANG, helmed by Executive Chef Justin Dingle-Garciyya, offers an all-day Thai dining experience. The Roof is an exclusive hideaway for hotel guests, featuring panoramic views of Fitzroy and the Melbourne skyline, perfect for a relaxed evening. Meanwhile, The Box provides a mix of retail essentials and snacks for guests on the go or enjoying a quiet night in.
The StandardX, Melbourne, is set to offer a unique blend of history and modernity, rooted deeply in the artistic and cultural heritage of Fitzroy while delivering the contemporary comforts and chic flair The Standard is renowned for. With its innovative design, creative influences, and exceptional dining options, The StandardX promises to be a vibrant addition to Melbourne’s hotel landscape.
