This New Tequila Was Bottled at the Highest Proof Allowed By Law

Herradura has revived one of its most distinctive tequila releases with the return of Directo de Alambique, a limited edition expression bottled at 110 proof. The release showcases tequila at its natural still strength, delivering an intense flavour profile without dilution. For enthusiasts seeking a more powerful and authentic agave experience, this rare bottling offers something few tequilas on the market can match.

High-proof spirits have become increasingly popular among enthusiasts who want bold flavours and a more concentrated tasting experience. While barrel-strength whiskies have long dominated this category, high-proof tequila remains relatively uncommon. That makes the return of Herradura Directo de Alambique especially noteworthy.

Originally introduced in 2012, Directo de Alambique has developed a loyal following over the years. Fans have waited more than a decade for the tequila’s return, and Herradura has now reintroduced the expression in limited quantities across the United States. The release offers drinkers an opportunity to experience tequila in one of its purest legal forms.

Unlike most premium tequilas, which are bottled at the standard 80 proof or 40 percent alcohol by volume, Directo de Alambique is bottled at 110 proof, or 55 percent ABV. This gives it significantly more intensity while preserving the spirit exactly as it leaves the still.

One of the most interesting aspects of Directo de Alambique is that it is bottled at still strength. This means the tequila is not diluted with water after distillation before being bottled.

Under regulations established by Mexico’s Consejo Regulador del Tequila, commonly known as the CRT, 55 percent ABV is the highest strength at which a spirit can legally be bottled while still being classified as tequila. Herradura has chosen to bottle Directo de Alambique at precisely that limit, making it one of the strongest commercially available tequilas on the market.

Although other distilleries have released higher-proof expressions in recent years, few have reached this legal ceiling. Well-known examples include El Tequileño at 100 proof, Suerte at 104 proof, Cazcanes No. 10 at 108 proof, and Fortaleza at 92 proof. Herradura now sits at the top of this category with its full 110-proof offering.

Beyond its impressive strength, Directo de Alambique also reflects Herradura’s commitment to traditional tequila production techniques that have helped establish the brand’s reputation over many decades.

The tequila begins with mature Blue Weber agaves sourced from different growing regions across Mexico. According to Herradura, selecting agaves from varying terroirs creates greater complexity and a broader range of natural flavours within the finished spirit.

After harvesting, the agave piñas are slowly cooked in traditional clay ovens for approximately 26 hours. Slow cooking allows the plant’s natural sugars to develop fully before fermentation begins.

Fermentation takes place outdoors near fruit trees, where naturally occurring wild yeasts contribute to the process. This old-fashioned approach differs from more controlled industrial fermentation methods and is intended to create additional layers of aroma and flavour that reflect the surrounding environment.

Once fermentation is complete, the tequila is distilled twice before being bottled directly at still strength without reducing the alcohol content.

While many consumers associate higher alcohol content with increased intensity alone, still-strength spirits often reveal greater flavour concentration as well.

Herradura describes Directo de Alambique as offering rich cooked agave notes supported by bright fresh fruit, citrus zest, herbal complexity, and a subtle hint of olive oil. These flavours are designed to showcase the natural character of the agave rather than masking it through dilution.

The elevated alcohol content also contributes to a fuller mouthfeel and a longer finish, allowing individual flavour components to evolve gradually as the tequila opens in the glass.

Many enthusiasts recommend allowing high-proof spirits to rest briefly after pouring or adding a few drops of water during tasting. Doing so can soften the alcohol while revealing additional aromas that might otherwise remain hidden.

For newcomers, a 110-proof tequila may seem intimidating. However, there are several reasons why experienced spirits enthusiasts actively seek out releases bottled at their natural strength.

The first is authenticity. Because the tequila has not been diluted before bottling, drinkers experience the spirit almost exactly as it emerged from the still. This provides insight into the distiller’s craftsmanship and highlights flavours that may become less pronounced at lower proof.

The second reason is flavour intensity. Higher alcohol concentrations carry aromatic compounds more effectively, producing bolder aromas and richer tasting notes. Rather than simply delivering more heat, well-made high-proof spirits often display greater complexity.

Finally, many collectors simply enjoy exploring unusual expressions that differ from standard releases. Limited editions like Directo de Alambique provide a unique opportunity to compare production styles and understand how proof influences flavour.

Although many buyers will likely enjoy Directo de Alambique neat, its higher proof also makes it particularly well suited for cocktails.

Classic tequila drinks such as Margaritas, Palomas, or Tequila Old Fashioneds often include citrus juice, sweeteners, bitters, or sparkling mixers that can soften the character of the base spirit. A tequila bottled at 110 proof retains its distinctive agave flavour even after these ingredients are added.

Bartenders often favour higher-proof spirits because they maintain their structure when diluted with ice during stirring or shaking. As cocktails gradually dilute while being enjoyed, the tequila continues to deliver flavour instead of becoming overwhelmed by other ingredients.

Because of its strength, however, smaller pours are generally sufficient, allowing drinkers to achieve balanced cocktails without excessive alcohol content.

The return of Directo de Alambique also reflects broader trends within the premium spirits industry. Consumers are increasingly seeking authentic, limited production releases that showcase traditional methods rather than mass-market consistency.

Higher-proof whiskies, cask-strength rums, navy-strength gin, and now still-strength tequila have all benefited from growing interest among enthusiasts who value transparency and craftsmanship.

Herradura’s decision to revive this expression suggests confidence that today’s tequila drinkers are more willing to explore bold and unconventional styles than they were when the bottle first appeared over a decade ago.

According to the brand, Directo de Alambique represents both Casa Herradura’s heritage and its ongoing commitment to preserving traditional tequila-making while meeting evolving consumer preferences.

Directo de Alambique is available now in limited quantities through select retailers across the United States with a suggested retail price of $80.

Given its long absence and niche appeal, availability may be limited as collectors and tequila enthusiasts seek out bottles before they disappear once again. Whether enjoyed neat, with a few drops of water, or as the foundation for premium cocktails, Herradura’s revived still-strength tequila offers one of the boldest agave experiences currently available within the legal limits of tequila production.
