All over the nation, there is an assortment of innovative places that have earned their respect in the cooking industry, but some of the best hidden gems are found on the coastline of Western Victoria.
A young culinary couple who take pride in their exceptional food knowledge and their experienced taste buds took on the challenge to explore the scenic Western Victorian coastline in hopes of discovering the best eateries and accommodation it had to offer. Kelly Thompson and Christian McCabe are living in Melbourne but were originally born and raised in Wellington and come from a background of food and hospitality.
They’re exploring the vibrant seasides of the Great Ocean Road and seeking out the region’s best discreet bars, rustic restaurants and boutique offering stays. In partnership with Mazda CX-5 and Gourmet Travellers, the couple spent a quiet, miniature holiday cruising the coast in search for the best-kept secrets that are truly a cut above the rest.
Lon Retreat, Point Lonsdale
Placed on 80 hectares of farmland, this retreat-style inspired restaurant is tucked away in Point Lonsdale on the Bellarine Peninsula.
Lon Retreat labelled the ‘new luxury stay’, has been owned and farmed since the 19th century by a family named the Geme’s. Previous to its current state, the farmhouse built with sandstone was the Geme’s family home and a bed & breakfast. Husband and wife Rob and Claire Geme’s run the retreat together.
Containing seven individually styled suites, each having a different view of the surrounding farmland and ocean. Each stay is an individual treatment, the Lon Retreat is an acquired ambience crafted for slow living and taking a break from the real world.
The suites are constructed to reflect the different elements of the surroundings. The creative idea to make no room the same as one another was intended to embrace natural, country Australian vibes.
Indulge in a spa massage, enjoy privacy in your own cosy courtyard, and take a bath in the stone baths that are fed with crystal mineral water or snuggle up in front of the in-suite double-sided fireplaces. A cultivated blend of modern luxury and tranquil coastal living, no matter the season Lon Retreat will cater to you.
Captain Moonlite, Anglesea
The Captain Moonlite restaurant of Anglesea is located in the Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club and is a well-hidden gem on the coast. Not only having unbeatable views and having their secret status, but the restaurants also boast a fine menu selection that showcases Greek and Mediterranean flavours. Matt Germanchis is the head chef and owner, along with his partner Gemma Gange.
Captain Moonlite’s exotic menu is a mixture of traditional European flavours along with modern twists. Classics such as rich, cucumber flooded tzatziki and tarama topped with Avruga served with homemade pita and traditional taverna-style souvlaki.
A popular main dish that Germanchis is proud to serve each time is his fresh snapper, leek and cos lettuce. Other must-try mains are the slow-roasted lamb, served with crispy potatoes and the Captain Moonlite’s own rustic take on the classic fish and chips.
Not only providing the delicious, mouth-watering menu with the venue provides a highly impressive wine list.
The wine is supplied from various nearby winemakers and wineries. Rosé blended by Save Our Souls is a recommended must, sipping it slowly while relaxing on the veranda, or if it is that exclusive experience you desire, why not order a glass or bottle, of the Holly’s Garden ÜberBrut sparkling and lavish on some fresh Pacific oysters.
Captain Moonlite is a hidden gem by the ocean that provides endless amounts of indulgence done right.
